Everyone around here uses cat 5e for phones

not everyone Dennis. I used to work on huge nortel meridian PBX systems, and all the switch tails [the pairs out of the pbx] were ALL cat3. I still use cat3 when I am able to. For coax, the standard is RG6 or RG6 quad shield.

It is easier to just carry cat5 on the truck though.

CATV does carry Telephone service, the cable Company mounts a converter next to your demarcation point where the Cable (RG-6 Quad) is converted to UTP (Unshielded twisted pair). Most telephone installations we see are using category 5E or category 6 cable in preparation for IP based systems, Category 3 will also work since it supports 10 Meg.

actually many years ago FCC issued an order that phone wire has to be minimum CAT3. "phone wire" or quad cable with red/green/yel/black and no wisted pairs has been banned for quite some time.

is there one type of cable to use for phone and cable lines? or do i use standard phone cable. can cat 3 be used for phone?
Actually, you have to use at least Cat3. If you're still using the R,G,Y,B "POTS cable", you're breaking the law. No kidding. As ridiculous as it might seem, it's federal law to use at least Cat3. That said, I don't think you have to worry about the wire police putting you in jail. :)

47CFR68.213(c) Material requirements.
(1) For new installations and modifications to
existing installations, copper conductors shall be, at a minimum, solid, 24
gauge or larger, twisted pairs that comply with the electrical
specifications for Category 3, as defined in the ANSI EIA/TIA Building
Wiring Standards.

Well you too were wrong.

Sorry I meant in my neck of the woods.

Wouldnt that be "two", not too? Unless you were meaning it as also, which I think would sound better if you said "Well you were wrong too"

:D Just poking fun, no harm intended!

I actually thought about posting both words (two and too). I figured someone would come back with the two.

Interesting question--- How would you write the sentence "There are three (to's, two's too) in the english language." It cannot be written as stated although it can be spoken.
