Pick two of these three, But only two

You can be any two of these, but not all three!

Fast
Cheap
Good

If its fast & cheap ... It won't be good
If its good & cheap ... It won't be fast
If its fast & good ... It won't be cheap

Which would you rather have?
Which would you rather sell your customers?

Sometimes you have to be cheap and fast = new residential

Sometimes you can be slow and excellent = open checkbook custom work.

I'm cheap and reasonably good. Although, this week alone, I discovered I had mis-installed three threeways! :x

Two were mismarked on the rough (identifiably mine), and the third was just a stupid trim mistake.

So I guess I'm cheap, slow, and bad. :?

But I'm working on it.

I tell my guys that there are 3 reasons why people will be repeat customers.
  1. They like us
  2. They like our work
  3. They like our price
I am mostly concerned with the first two.

Says you.

I can be all three.

I don't have to throw out my professionalism just because the customer specified cheap materials or methods.

Speed IMO is a separate issue that has to do with the individual.

Some people work fast and sloppy, some work slow and sloppy. Then there are the ones that can work fast and neat.

Some folks have a natural ability to work efficiently. I have gentleman working on my job now that is like lightning and it all looks good. 8) If I could clone this guy I would be very happy.

I would choose good.

Fast is frequently a function of the materials/methods and factors beyond our control. Slamming 3,000' of pipe down a hallway before the plumbers and duct guys get there is easy if you're willing to screw them over  Slamming that same 3,000 feet in if you are the last guy is less fast.

I worked with a guy once who would jokenly say this. "I may not be fast, but when I'm done it'll sure look like I was in a hurry!"

If I ain't fast, but I ain't slow, I guess that makes me half-fast! :p

Oh, a serious answer? Okay. I am all three. If I can be fast while being good, I can afford to be cheap.

My priorities are (1) Safety (you left that out of the list) and (2) Quality. The rest is a matter of profit margin. 8)

How about us just giving the customers the best value that we can while still making a decent living. You can buy cheap tools too. I also think you'll waste your money buying cheap tools. :p :D
