There is no way in h-- that i would even touch that mess. You just put your name on this garbage. If a permit was required ,please save a life and turn it in.
I agree! If you are there to troubleshoot, then make sure you list that in your invoice. I would also list any noticeable violation on the same invoice.

Pool panel

Pool panel

Looks like a Jandy PS-8 panel. The panel is listed and actually accepts all kinds of breakers such as Homeline, Seimans, GE, Cutler Hammer BR etc. Has listing right on door. The relays are controlled by a wireless PDA. By the way, UF is not approved for the feed or for the light. Talk about a can of worms....

would you as a contractor alert the owner of this unsafe condition or wait for the inspector to point it out during inspection, if this was not in the scope of your work?

The only problem I see is that he used a homeline panel. :-? :-?

Ok, all joking aside, that is horrible! I hope someone can talk the customer into hiring a real electrician for this job.

Actually, that's a Hayward (Goldline) Aqualogic panel. This is the stuff I (and the other guys that do pools) see all the time from our pool guy/plumber/landscaper/electrician competitors. This is what the bargain shopper gets for his dollar.

This is from a new pool contractor in town; this is their 5th job. They've been doing all their own electrical so far, and they called me a week or two ago to see if I could start doing their work. Since then, I've been called to troubleshoot two of their installs. Here's one from today (the first looked just as bad).

Enjoy:

Ughh.

The GFCI was tripping with one of the shell lights connected. There was a short somewhere in the UF that was feeding it, and the bulb was blown.

The installation looks like it is a temporary panel that has been gutted and changed 3 times and is twenty years old.
What does the HO think about the way it looks?
I dont think you would need to know much about the NEC to know that something is wrong.
UF to the pool light really takes the cake.

Shouldn't there be a Gfci on more than just the light.... The pump maybe and anything else close to the pool?? Need to post at local dist. on how not to wire a pool

no just the 120v shell lights get GFCI protection. We're still on the '05 NEC. There a fiber optic pedestal and some other LV lighting but its all hardwired. The fiber optic pedestal was about 36" from the wall of the pool behind a stone fountain; that's a no-no as well.
