Pig Tails for Device Connections

I thought that connecting wiring devices using pig tails rather than wiring through the devices was or is a code requirement. However, I seem to remember finding the ones in my house wired through the devices. Then again it would not make sense to have two terminals on a device if you could not use them to wire through. Is there any condition where pig tails are reqiured?

300.13(B) Only the grounded conductor that is being shared with more than one ungrounded conductor can't be spliced on the terminals.

This one will be debated forever. There is no rule or reason that you can't feed through the receptacle terminals. Exception being the neutral in multiwire circuits.

It is my opinion that the removal of any device should not effect the continuity of service of any other devices or equipment down line. I also don't like the idea of all the loads down line being fed through the terminal connection at each recpetacle. This is a design preference and not a code requirement.

One should turn power off when removing devices, thus interrupting the rest. Safety comes to mind.

The point of my post is not physical removal by the electrician, but more in the order of failure of the device and therefore resulting in loss of the circuit down line.

The only time i know that you must pigtail ,is with a multiwire circuit that is supplying a common yoke, then the neutral has to be pigtailed and both ungrounded conductors must be on a 2 pole breaker. Before 96 code here in pinellas county it was required to pigtail all receptacle wires, this was kicked to the curb in 96
