pigtailing neutrals on multiwire circuits

Anybody know what year pigtailing neutrals on a multiwire circuit became an nec requirment ? I know it has since I started in 1977. We ran into neutrals not pigtailed in an 1950 era building yesterday.Thanks for your input . CM

It was added to the NEC on the 1971 edition
