Pigtails in Panelboards

I have a 30A/2p circuit breaker in a 480V panelboard. In order to account for voltage drop to the load, I'm using a #4 wire. The breaker will only accept a #8. Is it against code to make a pigtail in the panelboard?

Re: Pigtails in Panelboards

Are you also upsizing the equipment grounding conductor? A 30 amp load would normally only need a #10 conductor (10,380 circular mils) and a #10 EGC as well. A #4 has an area of 41,740 circular mils. That is an upsize of the ungrounded conductors by a factor of 4.02 You need to upsize the EGC by that same ratio of area, which means you need a #4 EGC (the math is easy when the ungrounded and EGC start out as the same size). Reference 250.122(B).

Yes I fully intended to upsize the equipment grounding conductor also. Thanks for the reminder.
