Almost a foot of snow from 10PM Saturday to 10PM Sunday, then freezing rain for 4 hours, now it's warm, windy and supposed to rain a month's worth in a day. Oh the lights they are a-blinken'!

On my way home from the gym this morning around 4 I was privy to a lightshow that blacked out downtown. (FIGURES - I was on my way to McD for some carbs and the power went out 2 min before I got there) A decent sized tree limb snagged what I think is one of the substation feeders (?35kV)

Power at work went out around the same time, though I didn't know it until about 9. It's always a joy to come to work when there's no power. Everybody else does nothing, and my workload is essentially the sum of what they're not doing. You know it's bad when the boss calls you every 10 minutes for an ETA, to which my reply was "My shower won't take half an hour if you stop calling me..." Lots of faults elsewhere on the grid noticable through the evening. A couple must have been biggies, because you could see the effects of the auto-reclosers attempting to close back into the fault. The best part about being on the hill during this weather is watching the purple explosions miles away. When you can hear them you know they're good... Somehow I don't think this will be as fun to watch as Nov 2006, when I watched about 30 faults in the span of 12 hours. Had a tap fuse blow about 200' away; they're a bit louder than I would have expected.

Saw this on the Seattle news at 5AM. Evidently while these guys were clearing a branch another one came down and clipped the boom. Hope for the best, and give some thought to the rest of our brothers keeping the lights on...
ABERDEEN, Wash. (AP) - A Grays Harbor sheriff's deputy says a PUD worker was gravely injured when a tree blew down on a lift truck bucket.

Deputy Dave Pimentel says there were two workers in the bucket at the time and the injured worker fell about 40 feet.

The accident happened last night as the utility workers were trying to repair power outages.
