Plant equipment drop

We have stand alone equipment which is portable. We use SO cord (120V equipment)with strain reliefs at each end. In some cases the outlet box is permanently affixed to the equipment. In other cases is is free hanging next to the equipment.

From a purely practical viewpoint, free hanging, with the plugs being able to be pulled out in the event the equipment is moved would seem to make sense. In most cases, the electrical drop is next to a flexible air line, and is secured with plastic cable ties.

What does NEC say??

Re: Plant equipment drop

NEC 400.7 permits flexible cords for connection of equipment for frequent interchange. NEC 400.8 states that flexible cords are not to replace fixed wiring. Generally if the equipment is UL listed and is set up with a plug and portable, it is probably O.K. For approved cord drops, check with Daniel Woodhead.

Re: Plant equipment drop

Bob,

NEC 300.11(A) requires all boxes to be secured in place. If there are boxes hanging from cords, these are in violation.
In some cases the outlet box is permanently affixed to the equipment. In other cases is is free hanging next to the equipment.
The obvious solution would be to install the appropriate cord connectors. Twist-loc type could be called for.
