I have been told that plaster rings as an extension on surface mounted metal boxes with exposed metal conduit are not allowed by 2014 code? In this case the electrician used a standard 4 inch box and a metal plaster ring to reduce to a duplex receptacle with a plastic cover. I am unable to find any code violations, I'm I missing something?

False. No such prohibition.

Just thought of something, someone is gonna say it is not listed for the application and you need a raised cover. Eh, I have done this many times and never been called on it.

Unless there is a direct code reference disallowing such, I say legal.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.:)

How would it be any different than using a metal box that has the "ring" built in, and a plastic trim cover?

Personally, I prefer raised industrial covers, but that's for looks.

I prefer the raised cover also, but in a pinch a plaster ring with the rounded corners and a handy box plate works just fine in hidden corners and spaces, fugly but doable.

Fugly indeed,,, my coworkers would never let me live an install like that down. :)
They may have told him it was a code violation just to keep him from doing it. :p
