I am installing a new residential service of 400 amps w/2- 200 amp disconnects and I thought I should refresh my memory on grounding electrodes. I read (and I know I have read this many times before) that according to 250.52(6) I can use a ?? metal plate 1 foot square dig a hole with my backhoe 30? deep (250.53(H) toss in the plate and I done. How do I attach the # 4 CU wire to the plate? Stainless bolt & lug? I have never seen a plate electrode for electrical service. Has anybody had any experience with this? I have searched the forums but see no reference to this issue. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I have no experience with a plate electrode but I am sure you could use any fitting that is listed for direct burial.

May I ask why you have chose the plate electrode over the simpler ground rod setup?

Well go to Thomas & Betts they have lots of bolt connectors for any application like plates and there brass or copper hardware if needed.

On some jobs we use plates and mesh screen grounding under a yard in a plant and we must cad weld to the plate or the mesh no bolts .

But check out this site http://www.sankosha-usa.com/pdf/san-earth-tech.pdf

Its a new way to ground !!!!!

I echo Dennis' sentiments, and add that if you go through with it, let me know where this job is. There is an inspector who once wanted me to put one in because "he'd never seen one and wondered what it would look like." (I'm not kidding.)

I'd love to let him know where he could satiate his curiosity. :D

My thought on the plate electrode is that it is an easier solution in very rocky soils.

And the info that ohmhead posted is very informative. Learned something today!

Well George tell him to go to Thomas & Betts klick on ground plates our company has the grounding plates made at a metal shop that can UL stamp it .
They make all our custom junction boxes also with a UL stamp .

Ill look in my picture albums from jobs we have done and see if i can locate one for your inspector installed ill post it .

You see this more on a power plant job new or refit job mostly ,
Never have i seen it on any commercial job yet its aways ground rods in a delta .

Its mainly the HV Switch Yard or a structure grounding thing or jails & prisons thats were you see them .
