For a Class I Div. 2 installation of loop powered instruments that are non-incendive, my customer specs. calls for PLTC cable in conduit.

My installer wants to use type TC cable. All other specs of the TC cable he has are equal or better than the PLTC specs the customer has given me and in Article 336 and by the cable mfg.

So the questions is: Is PLTC a subset of TC ? Which would be OK, I think. Or should I tell the installer to get cable marked PLTC ?

For this question I only care about this, not other details or opinions such as "it should be acceptable ...". I just need to meet or exceed the customers spec. so I don't have to get it rewired once it's delivered.

725.61 has a table that show no substitutes for PLTC.

Is that what you're getting at ? 'cause my question in not about installing, uses, or otherwise. Both can use used for this application.

TC vrs PLTC cable

TC vrs PLTC cable

TC cable is 600V rated, PLTC is 300V rated.

TC cable is generally used for 120V motor control circuits, branch circuit, and feeder applications, 480V and below.

PLTC cable is typically used in instrumentation circuits, 24VDC 2-20 ma, 24VDC Discrete Input and Output circuits.

Customer spec says use PLTC than using any other type would be not inacordance with spec therefore may need to be replaced.

PLTC is smaller, therefore customer likes the idea of overall savings resulting in the cable taking less space in control cabinets, smaller conduits, etc.

Hope this helps.
