I do some work for an industrial plant that asked the question "can we install plugs on our motors?". The motors in question range from 1.25hp to 7.5hp. They are fed from an MCC that has individual buckets with fused disconnects (20A) and AB 1336 Inverters. The current overprotection in the inverters is set accordingly for the FLA of each motor. They would like to install the plugs to facilitate faster replacement. Can they do this?

Yes.

However, they must be horsepower rated if they will be plugged-unplugged while under load.

Most installations I have seen are the twist-lock or pin & sleeve type to prevent accidental "operation". There is at least one brand (Meltric) that has a quick-make/quick-break construction.
