I've seen a friend fish cable, romex & bx, from the basement up to another floor (Old work) using an existing chase way that contained plumbing pipes. I never thought about it before but is it code compliant to do so?

I think that most of us have done that when left with no other choice.

No code against that. Why do you think that's an issue?

Knowing of such a chase (and your competition does not) has made a many a jobs easier to win on bids, and profitable. Of course its not OK in all situations, just most.
