Does the 5' rule for grounding the service panel apply to copper water piping? Can a service panel be grounded to a copper water line when the main entrance for the water line is about 60' away from the panel? Thanks.

Re: Plumbing Ground

Yes, if you are refering to 250.52(A)(1).

Even though it is desired to have the GEC as short as possible, the metal water pipe will still be required to be used as a grounding electrode, no matter how far it is from the service.

Re: Plumbing Ground

Thanks Bryan, so are you saying it is OK to have the subpanel grounded to a copper water line where the main feed is on the other side of the house?

Re: Plumbing Ground

No. First, why are you bonding a subpanel to the copper water line? Second, if this was service equipment the 5 foot rule WOULD apply (as Brian said) and you have to run a grounding electrode conductor back to within 5 feet of where the water service enters the building.

Re: Plumbing Ground

Mike,
Check with your local AHJ. In my town we are allowed to connect the GEC to the water spigot in the back yard even when the water service enters from the street. However, this is not really using the underground piping as a grounding electrode, it is simply bonding the interior piping. So I guess they are not requiring us to use the UG pipe as an electrode in this case, but rather the 2 grounding rods they require. Most homes out here have non metallic water mains anyway, even the older homes as the old UG pipes are replaced, go with PVC. However is is unheard of to have non metallic piping inside of an older home, a fact which makes the bonding very important on service upgrades. We are also allowed to bond the gas piping with a jumper at the water heater.

Re: Plumbing Ground

Now, what happens if there is at least 10' of metallic water pipe in the ground in the backyard? If the electrical service is located at the rear of the property, can the GEC to the water pipe be made within 5' of the backyard pipe entering the structure?
