PMG Excitation Generator

Hello All,

I just wanted to see if anyone had experience with PMG type excitors for generators. I have always been told that they are used in generators that are going to be supplying motor loads or a lot of VFDs since the noise from the drives do not mess up the voltage regulation algorithm. I know that they are good too for short circuit capacity. Does anyone else specify them? For what applications? Is there a minimum size you specify them on? Should they be specified for all motor/drive applications?

A lot of pros and few cons. Suggest you take a look at FET based automatic voltage regulators as well.

Kinda also depends on the age of the generator. Before electronic governors, lots/many/most large generators used them (e.g. Hoover Dam).
