Would like to know how some here are wiring pole barns.

-NM cable from above sleeved in conduit?

- Contiuous conduit run horizontally around the exterior walls?

- A/C cable?

Thanks

What do you mean when you say "pole barn"? An actual barn with art 547 conditions inside or just a "pole building" type of design building but used for other purposes?

Type of use factors in for me. I've done NM, MC/AC, PVC, EMT, UF cable - depends on use of the building and what is exposed vs concealed as well.

Pole building type used to store farm equipment. Tractors, Combines, etc.

No livestock or any type of animal containment.

Since I'm not very good with bending conduit, I put vertical 1x3's between girts near the top and wrapped NM cable around the building up high secured to those 1x3's (and stayed 1.5" away from the horizontal girts). I then came down on the face of the girts to boxes at a usable level. If exposed, those would be easy with EMT (no bending required). I chose to insulate and cover some of the walls, so those got vertical 2x3 furring strips and the NM just came down the girts and was concealed behind OSB wall covering over the flat 2x3's.

This is easier to see than describe...

In other than dwelling applications NM cable can possibly be used but needs to be within at least a 15 minute rated finish.

Price of NM is sky high right now and I'd still likely go with MC or AC cable even if not going to see inspection. Is also more rodent resistant in that kind of building application.
