New underground services to a farmhouse as well as a barn and a machine shed all fed from a pole service requires a disconnect and overcurrent protection according to article 547.9. I thought there was something similar in the NEC applying to non farm situations but I can't seem to find anything about it. If not, then the service conductors for a home and a couple detached buildings could be routed to an outside meter on a pole and terminated to a non disconnect/non fused terminal box (like how many farms used to be wired). Any comments? Thanks.

How about:

230-70. General. Means shall be provided to disconnect all conductors in a building or other structure from the service-entrance conductors.

230-71 is the "six-handle rule", a disconnect doesn't have to be a single handle. It could be a sub-panel with no more than 6 breakers.

I don't see any problem coming down from a meter to a junction box then going to a disconnect at each building. All conductors would have to be sized as service conductors for the load served and there would have to be the neutral bonding and grounding at each disconnect since that is the first means of disconnect.
