I have confused myself. We are presently under 2002 Code but I've been to too many 2005 seminars. I have a newly constructed sepeate building from a residence. It is a detached garage with lights and GFCI's but provisions for a future in-ground pool.
The contractor wired the building with 3 wire USE, using conduit only at the terminalions, following all the rules of 250.32 B 2.
Under 2002 Code will the panel in this detached garage be permissible to feed the pool branch circuits ?

I am not sure about the 2002 code but I believe the 2005 will not allow that installation Art. 680.25(B)(2) says that an equipment grounding conductor must meet the requirements of 250.32(B)(2)-- which says an EGC must be present.

Dennis, Thats the way I read it but I was unsure. It appers the 2005 rquires the feed to comply with 250.32 B 1 and have the grounding conductor whereas the 2002 allows 250.32B 2. Studying 1 code, enforcing another sucks.

Is that the right Art. Dennis? Where does it say that?

No, it ain't right. 250.32(B)(1) is what art 680.25 (B)(2) refers to. Art. 250.32(B)(1) states that an equip grounding conductor shall be run with the supply conductors

680.25(B)(2) in the 2002 code permits this installation.
(2) Separate Buildings. A feeder to a separate building shall be permitted to supply swimming pool equipment branch circuits, or feeders supplying swimming pool equipment branch circuits, if the grounding arrangements in the separate building meet the requirements in 250.32. Where installed, a separate equipment grounding conductor shall be an insulated conductor.

The installation may meet 680.25(B) in the 2002 NEC, but it doesn't seem to meet 680.25(A). In order to use the exception (by considering the feeder to be existing when the pool does get installed) the cable would need to include an equipment grounding conductor. I'm looking at the 2005 NEC, but I don't see a margin line by that section.

still confused
