Does anyone have a good explaination for requiring conduit to be installed at least 5 feet from the inside walls of the pool, even when installed underneath 8 inches below the concrete decking? I can understand if no concrete was involved, but most pools are enveloped with only 3 - 4 feet. I also understand why conduit is not allowed underneath the pool.

Have not been flagged for this, but if enforced then lot of extra trenching would be involved. I think the installation would be better underneath the concrete instead on 18 inches of earth.

Re: Pool and Conduit Question

As long as the wiring is in approved conduit (table 680.10)it can be less than 5' from the pool. Also anything associated with the pool is not restricted. 680.10

Speedy:
I agree with you except if you are not restricted by space limitations and running to any equipment within 5 feet.
If the pool is out in the open and you run your conduit underneath a concrete deck that extends 3 feet from the pool wall and branch it away from the pool to some pool equipment, I read that this would be a violation of 680.10.
The only possible reason I can see for this is they want to eliminate any stray voltages that may occur from stray fields from the conductors in the conduits. If this was to occur, then the bonding should take care of this.

Any thoughts?
