I remember seeing somewhere that low voltage landscape lighting cannot be installed within 10 feet of the inside wall of the pool. However, I cannot find it in the code. It is possible I read it in sone landscape lighting instructions.

Also, I see no minimum clearances on line voltage lighting, other than height and GFCI requirements.

I have a designer that wants to put recessed walk lights in a low brick wall that will be close to the pool.

Can anyone help me out with the proper requirements?

thanks...........

Yes, 680 is what I have been looking at. I was wondering if anyone knows about the 10 foot rule.

Here is what I have deduced. It appears that line voltage luminaires are permitted as close as 5 feet to the pool. They must be GFCI protected unless they are at least 10 feet away form the pool.

Low voltage lighting can only be GFCI protected on the high side of the txformer. Therefore, the low side is not GFCI protected , and the fixtures must be located 10 feet or more away from the inside wall of the pool.

Am I on the right track here?

Check out 411.4 as well as the above sections.

not sure I agree with you on 10'

2008 ,..680.22(C) (4)....Lighting outlets installed in the area extending between 5' and 10' ....

If this were a low voltage system 411.4(b) would restrict them closer than 10 feet

So 680.22(B)(1) says if they are closer than 5 feet they must be up at least 12 feet. But it doesn't specify line or low voltage. 411.4 says 10 feet away unless permitted by article 680. Article 680 says GFCI protected within 10 feet. Since you can't GFCI protect the load side of the system, it looks like 411.4 has the final say.

Forgot to mention, we are using the 2005. Don't have a 680.22(C)(4)
