A Home owner installed a pool 30 feet in diameter water level 4' deep 200 feet from his home and reliezed that a 14ga extension cord will not opperate the pump (12amps 115v). He is looking for a quick install for electrical hook up for the pump, and a pool light. However he also wants to put some outdoor lighting (load not known, Small pond with pump (load not known), and some general rec. for a gazebo. All these items are located 200' from his home.right now alls he wants is power to the pump and pool light. the rest is future. What i was planning to do was install a 60a subpanel and the run uf cable from the home to the panel. Then either in pvc or uf to the rec. for the pump, and light. The homeowner will do the trenching. and install the posts for the recs. and subpanel. cable length to feed the subpanel will be 220' then use about 10' pvc to feed conductors to the panel, and on the other end use pvc with an lb to feed into the home. another 80' run for the rec. for the pump and light. Most likely i will use pvc with 12ga thwn for the run 3 hots 2 nuetrals ground. Outdoor rate rec. box with locking capability single rec. use a spit circuit duplex rec. for the light. I'm still looking into the grounding requirements for the pool.I Believe voltage drop will play a factor. so the feed conductors need to be a #3.What do you guys think of this project? More info needed? What would be your cost in your areas? Oh yeah one last thing. I gave the homeowner a price to expect from $3,000 -$4,000 he about fainted. He was looking at $1,000. I think the biggest price will be the wire.thanks.

Re: Pool Bid ?

First forget about using UF for the feeder to a pool panel.

These are your choices rigid metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, liquidtight flexible nonmetallic conduit, or rigid nonmetallic conduit.

Check out 680.25(A)

Re: Pool Bid ?

Right off the top, the pool light concerns me. I've had one too many customers ask for a recept. right next to the pool for their "pool light." 680.22(A)(3) prohibits this (as does 680.22(A)(2) .) So, I give them the required recept. (between 10-20 feet from the inside wall of the pool) and a single twist lock for the pump and that's that. Make sure your customer understands this before you proceed.

Beyond that... I've done many a quickie pool job (which is to say not the complex in ground variety.) I always charged 1K, for pools up to 40' away from the house, with the customer doing all trenching and backfill. Beyond 40' the price starts going up.

Re: Pool Bid ?

Hey iwire thanks for pointing that out. i was looking 680.25(a) was just referring for the branch circuit from the panel. As for the voltage drop i also posted a thread on engineering/calculations and found out i can use a #6.
cselectric the rec. is factor built into the pool. with about a 7 foot cord attached.

Re: Pool Bid ?

1000.00 if it was like "cselectric said,,,,,
pump motor, pool lite, outdoor lighting, pond pump, gazebo load, and all the other stuff the guy is gonna come up with, you better do a load calc."60amp??"
uf from house to panel,(680.25a)
uf to pump,(680.21a1)
3 hots-2 nuetrals=good luck w/that,,,"gfi"
receptacle for light,(680.23b2)(680.24a)(680.24b2)
7 foot cord? to what? (680.7a)
"biggest price is gonna be the wire??????"

Re: Pool Bid ?

I'm thinking there is a hole built into the pool for the pool light, not an illegal receptacle. Need an insulated neutral to that, not to mention an insulated #8 through the same PVC bonded from the light support to the insulated grounding conductor. Do not cut the whip attached to the light, roll it up in the light nitch so when the bulb needs to be changed you can just unscrew the whole light assembly and pull it up on the deck to change the bulb. The whip has to be pulled through the PVC to a pool light junction box and terminated to your conductors including your insulated grounding conductor. The #8 has to be potted at the pool light mounting strap. I just got $950 for an above ground pool, and an additional $950 for the light plus the price of the bulb. The light was existing along with the pool light junction box. I was able to run everything along the bottom of the deck, so there was no trenching involved. Make sure you do all required bonding (metal frame of pool to pump lug, or if no pump lug- to insulated grounding wire). If I could draw this up for you like some of the other guys used to I would. send me a PM with a fax # if you can and I'll scratch something on paper and fax it to you, but it may really look like scratch to you. There is a lot more involved in a pool than replacing an extension cord with a twist lock. As someone stated, the light has to be GFCI protected (breaker).
