Could someone please help me understand article 680.26 B (1) and (2) in the 2008 NEC.
I know I need to provide a bonding ring around the pool in addition to the typical bonding that is always done. But I guess I am not sure why, when if not all the time and how?
Thank you,

Tacomafc

can you use split bolts???

can you use split bolts???

I have a pile of old split-bolts of various sizes and styles.. Can split-bolts be used to connect the copper gounding wire to the rebar in swimming pools??? I do not know if they are listed for such purpose, but they seem a lot more sturdy than the water pipe style that the supply house will stock!

Interesting ( in terms of connections to the grid )

2008 NEC- 680.26(B)
(B) Bonded Parts. The parts specified in 680.26(B)(1)
through (B)(7) shall be bonded together using solid copper
conductors, insulated covered, or bare, not smaller than
8 AWG or with rigid metal conduit of brass or other identified
corrosion-resistant metal. Connections to bonded
parts shall be made in accordance with 250.8.
An 8 AWG or
larger solid copper bonding conductor provided to reduce
voltage gradients in the pool area shall not be required to be
extended or attached to remote panelboards, service equipment,
or electrodes.

Look at 2005 NEC- 680.26(C)
(C) Equipotential Bonding Grid. The parts specified in
680.26(B) shall be connected to an equipotential bonding
grid with a solid copper conductor, insulated, covered, or
bare, not smaller than 8 AWG or rigid metal conduit of
brass or other identified corrosion-resistant metal conduit.
Connection shall be made by exothermic welding or by
listed pressure connectors or clamps that are labeled as
being suitable for the purpose and are of stainless steel,
brass, copper, or copper alloy.
The equipotential common
bonding grid shall extend under paved walking surfaces for
1 m (3 ft) horizontally beyond the inside walls of the pool
and shall be permitted to be any of the following:

If you look at Sec. 680.26 from 2005 and 2008 you will see a dramatic change in the code. The labeled as being suitable for the purpose and are stainless steel, brass, copper, or copper alloy has simply been replaced with 250.8 methods.

(A) Permitted Methods. Grounding conductors and bonding
jumpers shall be connected by one of the following
means:
(1) Listed pressure connectors
(2) Terminal bars
(3) Pressure connectors listed as grounding and bonding
equipment
(4) Exothermic welding process
(5) Machine screw-type fasteners that engage not less than
two threads or are secured with a nut
(6) Thread-forming machine screws that engage not less
than two threads in the enclosure
(7) Connections that are part of a listed assembly
(8) Other listed means
