I believe 680.25(B)(2) permits it. What I'm not sure about is what exactly do they mean by meeting the requirements of 250.32(B)(1). When I read this section, I believe the code requires the ground to be sized correctly, and to be connected to everything a ground would be connected to in a home (water pipe). Also, there should not be a grounding rod.

Has anyone done this before? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Frank

No. What this means is that the feeder to the separate structure must incorporate an equipment grounding conductor. If the separate structure was supplied by feeder under the provisions of 250.32(B)(2), you could not serve the pool equipment from that panelboard.

A grounding electrode IS required per 250.32(A).

I looked at the subpanel. It is fed underground using PVC. There are two hots, one neutral and one ground. If I install a grounding rod, I should be able to use this panel to feed the pool. Am I correct?

Frank

p.s. Thanks for your help

Assuming the ground is insulated, yes. :)

Edit: 250.32(A) requires you to follow 250.50; you are to use all electrodes present at the detached structure. (So, technically just installing a ground rod without looking around is not correct. Just being thorough.)

Right you are, Dave - thanks for the correction! :)

680.25(B) Grounding. An equipment grounding conductor shall be installed with the feeder conductors between the grounding terminal of the pool equipment panelboard and the grounding terminal of the applicable service equipment or source of a separately derived system. For other than (1) existing feeders covered in 680.25(A), Exception, or (2) feeders to separate buildings that do not utilize an insulated equipment grounding conductor in accordance with 680.25(B)(2), this equipment grounding conductor shall be insulated.

If the panel in the garage is not service equipment , and the new panel is in a seperate building, then I do not believe the panel in the cabana may serve to supply the pool Eq.

Thanks

But I still think the panel in the existing structure (to supply pool eq) must have an EGC from the service EQ. It still sounds as if this panel is fed from a remote panel in the garage. Yes / No ?? Or is the panel in the garage the service eq for the prmises??

I'll keep an eye out I'm curious

The grounding conductor is insulated and it is 6 AWG. Therefore it should 680.25(B)(2).

Thanks for everyone's input. I learn so much on this board.
