pool heater/pool pump

Does anyone know why a pool pump for a permanently installed pool requires GFCI protection and a heater for the same does not? Thanks.

NEC 2008 680.22 (B) Requires the outlet supplying a pool pump .... whether by receptacle or direct connection be GFCI protected.

I have not found anything for GFCI protection for the heaters yet.

Is the heater a gas-fired heater? I'd put both on GFCI protected systems.

No, electric only. No mention of GFCI protection in cut sheet from heater Mfg either.

I am not sure why but that is correct. The heater does not need gfci but the pump does.
