If the cord assembly for a pool light is long enough to reach directly to the pool equipment area does it have to terminate specifically in a listed pool junction box? I have 4 pool lights all within 75' of the pool control panel, seems unnecessary to go thru j-boxes to get to final termination.

The light junction box can be omitted if the transformer is listed for this. The ones I've seen are just a standard pool light transformer and you order a kit that makes it suitable. As I recall Intermatic makes a kit for this. See 680.24(B).

Take a look at 680.24. If your pool control panel meets all those specifications for 4 lights (I heave not seen one that does) then you can omit the box. They do make listed pool boxes for more than one light.

Presumably any pool control panel with the appropriate listed adapter can be used.
