Why can't you use any outdoor transformer that goes from 120V to 12V. Does this have to fit in a specific space- in other words are there space restrictions?

Jonesy, find the lamp wattage, divide that by 12 (I = P/E), and get a 12v transformer with at least the resultant lamp current.

Be sure to read 680.23(A)(2).
If you're talking about the lights inside the pool, Just any ole LV transformer won't get it.

better off getting a new pool light. Its not that much if is is a single color one. Pentair pool light is one the best value.
If you replace the xfmer, just remember to replace the bulb and the lens oring.

I agree with Hillbilly, any old transformer will not do. It is required to be listed as a swimming pool and spa transformer.

680.23(A)(2) Transformers. Transformers used for the supply of underwater luminaires (fixtures), together with the transformer enclosure, shall be listed as a swimming pool and spa transformer. The transformer shall be an isolated winding type with an ungrounded secondary that has a grounded metal barrier between the primary and secondary windings.
