I think it is a waste of money. If it were one bit of a danger don't you think that the NEC would say that you have to have GFCI protection. The reason it is even in the code for pumps is because if it is cord & plug someone may plug something else into the outlet.

I have never installed a gfci on a pool pump that is direct wired and I haven't killed anyone yet. Not in the pool anyway:grin:

most pool pump motors that i have seen recently have a tag on the motor that says it should be gfi protected. would you still not use a gfi?

For the same reason nobody waks out of the doctor's office these days without a prescription for antibiotics, or some bloodwork, even if they're perfectly healthy. It's a legal defense in the event somebody gets hurt.

If the pool motor says that I must then I woud have to but I don't believe it is the job of the manufacturers to tell the NEC what is correct. I have not seen the tags you refer to and have not had to do it.

We have seen and discussed a very similar issue in regards to hydromassage tubs. Pool manufacturers write in the specs to run a #8 ground back to the panel. That is total BS--- why should we have to do that if the NEC says otherwise.

As far as I am concerned it is the manufacturer covering their butts because they don't really understand the code.
