Pool Problems

I have a pool and where the pump is placed (above ground pool), which is which it pretty much has to be placed, the clearance horizontally from the pool wall is only 4 feet to the outside of the deck. The problem, I have a privacy fence, dogs, and want to box off this are with lattice or something to prevent the dogs from damaging the cord, pump, ect.. The minimum distance from the outside of the pool is 6' to place an outlet the feeder underground obviously 18" with UF wire. I have the codes, but will an inspect fail with an GFCI, locking, ect outlet at the distance I have to work with? If so can I keep it at this distance and use Liquid tight there is no mention of this in my local edition book (2008).

If the outlet is less than 6' then I would recommend a permanent barrier around that area otherwise it will not be compliant.

You also mentioned 18" for UF-- not sure where that is gotten. 24" with UF unless it is GFCI protected then you can go to 12"-assuming 120V pool .

Is the pool is not over 42" deep?

my comments

2014 NEC

680.10 - distance from pool edge
LT/pvc/metal (raceway) needs insulated egc 680.21(A)(1) (in general, anything pool needs insulated egc)

for UF the magic # is 5ft from the water edge. 5+ft and you are ok, less than 5ft is a no-go. always GFI that stuff.

Underground wiring isn’t permitted under permanently installed pools
or within 5 ft horizontally from the inside wall of the pool unless necessary
to supply the permanently installed pool or storable pool
equipment.

i believe this also applies to a permanently installed pump that is corded (GFI required, cord restrictions also apply, 680.20)
the code allows for less than 5ft, but must be in a complete raceway system, RMC, IMC, PVC <-- 680.10

NEC 2014 , although fig 680-23 is a tad confusing to me....... untill you read further into the code

if the corded item is to a pump, what i said earlier is a MAYBE, see fig 680-23, it is distance on an angle

680.22(A)(2) <-- point to point measurement, etc

(2) Circulation System. Receptacles for permanently installed pool,
outdoor spa, and outdoor hot tub motors, or other loads directly related
to the circulation system must be located not less than 10 ft from the
inside walls of a permanently installed pool, outdoor spa, or outdoor
hot tub, or not less than 6 ft from the inside walls of a permanently
installed pool, outdoor spa, or outdoor hot tub if they meet all of the
following conditions: Figure 680–23
(1) Consist of a single receptacle
(2) Be of the grounding type
(3) Have GFCI protection

so note item (1), no duplex allowed

with all the #'s NEC restricts on, i am not sure one can be compliant. as example, if you are under 5ft horizontally you can still do underground, but then your outlet would need to be very high to meet the 6ft min #, but then that may violate the max cord length, etc.

i think this section of NEC needs a thorough comb through to make sure things jive. as-is i see some things that dont make sense to me, etc.
