A question for you pros: I recently found a pool pump with its dedicated ground wire connected to the house main grounding stake. Acceptable? Safe?

if you are saying it is connected directly to the ground rod and nothing else than the answer is no.

Re: Pool pump dedicated ground

Bill I think your talking about the Equal potential bonding conductor?

There is no requirment in the NEC to run this conductor back to the service grounding. This conductor is not for grounding but to just keep all metal that is within 5' of the pool at the same "equal" voltage. While connecting it to the GE might not cause a hazard it could cause a problem if the service grounded conductor (neutral) lost connection. This could put a voltage to earth on all the metal bonded by this conductor. But then so could the required connection to the pump EGC?

Please read 680.26 in the "2002" NEC.

Re: Pool pump dedicated ground

Is this the equipment ground or the bond conductor. Sounds like it's not right in any case, unless there is more to the installation.
