I don't think you're actually running a circuit for a pool pump timer.

Ha, yes the circuit is for the pump not the timer. Yes it needs to be gfi protected. It's in article 680 permanently installed pools, under gfi protection of electrical equipment. Hopefully you would be able to find it from there. I would hope you would know that just because sowmethimg is hardwired or not should not decider wether or not it needs to be gfi protected...
 
Maybe he is referring to whether or not the portion of the circuit which is from where the source to the pool timer needs to be gfci’d When a pool timer provides GFCI protection for the pool pump?

Seems pointless to have a timer with GFCI protection within it if you are required to have GFCI protection on it's supply circuit.

Only thing that NEC says must have GFCI protection as a general rule is the pump. Location or other conditions of the timer maybe could trigger GFCI on the supply circuit but typically not going to be the case.

If you have a GFCI breaker on the pump circuit and the timer is on the same circuit - it will be protected anyway - which I would guess is how a majority of them are, unless one has something with GFCI protection within the timer.
