pool question

I read the NEC as that a pool pump can be supplied through a basement using NM, but a pool light must use individual wire and be in conduit, am I right and why? Both terminate on an exterior wall of the basement, both are GFI protected individually, so why the differance?

Just making a guess but I would think that the light being in the water and the pump motor not contacting the water would have a little something to do with it,

I realize the fact that the low votage light is in water and the motor isn't, but both supplies are within a dwelling and their connection to the serviced devise is by a plug on the outside of said dwelling. if a fault in either is detected the gfi would trip, in the case of the motor could be a shorted winding and in the case of the light a short in it's transformer windings, either way the circuits would be dead via gfi tripping, right? Maybe a better way to frame the question would be, Why does the grd for pool luminaries have to be coated, thus setting the stage for indiviual wireing in conduit?

it's an above grd pool with a trough the side wall, low voltage light. Low voltage is suppied by a transformer which is wet location rated as well as the cord that attaches to the light it'self which will be nonmetalic rigid conduit from the transformer to the light. The conduit length is about 12' so within code for setback requirements.

Well i got inspected and all is well in the North Country.
One rework item and that too is done
100 % inspected and we are pooling now
Thanks for the replies

If the low voltage light was 15 volts or less it didnt need gfci (680.23). Also maybe I misunderstood but are you plugging the light in? I believe you cannot cord and plug an underwater luminaire regardless of the set-back.

stubbie

The rework item was to hard wire the transformer supply to the circuit through watertight conduit.
if it had been a storable style pool i could have had it be plug in.
Oh well like i said all is well in the Northland
Thanks for your replies
