Does anyone know of any code issues ( or any other issues) for installing a pool sub-panel off an existing 50 amp sub-panel ?

The situation I have is a small (inground) pool being installed with 1 filter motor ( approx 9 amps @ 240 vac), a Polaris motor (approx 7 amps @ 240 vac), a GFI receptacle and a pool light. It's impractical and a hardship to run to the main breaker panel but there's a 50 amp sub-panel existing in the garage. My thought was to install a 40 amp sub-panel in the shed where the pumps will be located with the feed in PVC back to the panel in the garage. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Phil

Re: Pool sub-panel from a sub-panel

I just completed the same project in which we installed the sub panel in the garage and then fed a Intermatic pool panel which has 2 built in timers and a 6 circuit sub panel built in as one unit. The requirements for the garage panel were it had to be feed by conduit and absolutly had to be 4 wire fed (insulated ground was a must). From the garage sub panel you just countinue on with insulated grounds and everything was installed in conduits. The Intermatic Pool panel was excellent for our needs and may be viewed at http://www.intermatic.com/?action=subcat&sid=178 .

We hard wired all the pumps, heaters so GFI protection was not required except for the pool light and the required GFI recepticle which was installed right in the Intermatic Pool Panel as space is provided.

Wayne,

Thanks for the reply. I think sections 620.21(A)4 and 680.25(A) Exception are what I was looking for. The existing sub-panel feeder cable assembly is an SER cable.
