I'm running a seperate sub-panel for the pool. Can I use alum wire if the ground is insulated. I'm running 4 wires in a pipe 2 hots 1 neutral 1 ground.

For the feeder, I'd say yes. For pool motor and light branch circuits, those grounding wires must be copper.

I disagree. Take a look at 680.25 with this code reference in mind!

110.5 Conductors. Conductors normally used to carry current shall be of copper unless otherwise provided in this Code. Where the conductor material is not specified, the material and the sizes given in this Code shall apply to copper conductors. Where other materials are used, the size shall be changed accordingly.

Doesn't NEC 680 augment the first 3 chapters of the code? 250.118 or 250.122 allows aluminum equipment grounding conductors and I see nothing in 680.25 that prohibits that. I must admit I've never comprehended 110.5 before, but that does add an interesting twist as to what the minimum size aluminum conductor would have to be. I'm guessing that this may mean a #10 alumuinum wire is the minimum size since that is typically equivalent to #12 copper.
