So I'm reading this morning's paper.... see this ad in the "Rite-Aid" circular:

10'x30" pool
69.99 - 30 MIR = $39.99

I remember....
Last year, one of the inspectors called me to give me a "heads-up" re:pools and GFCIs.
Sure enough, my phone starts ringing a few days later.

All these people buy these $40 pools and run a mile of x-cord to where-ever and then enjoy their day in the pool...then get a choice ~ remove the pool, hire an EC or pay the fine/s.

I love summer....

Celtic these pools scare the heck out of me, they are for sale everywhere. Here I see them at CVS, BJs, and any large retailer.

I just this past week got a email from my wifes brother including pictures of family fun in that very type of pool.
I have no doubt the filter is running on a cheap two wire extension cord from a non-GFCI outlet. I would like to say I can fix that but I can not.

Obviously I will not be letting my kids in that pool.

I don't believe for a moment that these pools will not lead to electrocutions and families that are devastated with loss.

Two years ago, in Lancaster County, PA, a young girl was electrocuted related to one of these pools. The townhome had no GFCI receptacle on the exterior, so they had a cord running out the back door. Due to the aluminium storm door opening and closing on the cord so many times that summer, the cord wore through. A child was summarily electrocuted to death when the cord wore through enough. This caused increased enforcement action in my area related to these pools, and caused an increased frequency of red-tags for wiring jobs that were being done in rooms of a home where an outside receptacle at the front or back of the home could be easily added (where none existed before).

My wife just saw the ad....

She tells me....last year she took the kids to a friend's house for a "playdate". These people had the $40 pool....complete with x-cord to God-knows-where....the Mrs. tells here friend "My hubby will kill me if he finds out I let the kids in this pool (go Wifey!)....now the kids (ours, the friends, and another friends) are all standing around in their swimsuits armed with empty water pistols and such....not a happy crowd.

How's this for a "solution"?
Mrs. tells her friend - let's unplug the pool for the hour or so the kids are in it, then plug it back in when they are done.

Not "perfect"....but "safe"...for the time.

Her friend has yet to call for a proper GFI install....

IF these pool manufac.s supplied a GFCI cap on their products (similar to hair dryers) would this in any way alleviate the situation?

Then they wouldn't be $40 dollar pools...

My wife wants one here at house.

'It's only $xx.00'

'They could not sell it if it was not safe'

She is too nice to believe a company in China and an importer here in USA would make and sell an unsafe product.

We will not be getting one, as far as the brother in laws about the best I can hope for is an unplug but I bet they don't.

Maybe I just send my wife over with a plug in GFCI cord like I carry in the van for my use.
