This is my first post so sorry if I run on. I am in Long Island New York and I am going to do a ingrround pool, my question is about grounding and bonding. I went to past posts but didn't see what I was looking for. The pool is 20 years old and the yard is being redone so they would like the pool up to code.
1. Inside the light fixture that will be 120 volts does the ground have to go back to the panel? can I splice it with the ground for the GFCI that is protecting the ckt that is a seperate ground?
2. The pool bond #8 does it have to go back to the panel unbroken? 3. What is the size of the groung that has to go to the pump I am being told everything from a #8 to a 12. The run will be about 100 feet away.
Thanks for the help.

A word of caution, pools wiring when installed improperly can have deadly consequences. Here is an excellent document written by Mike Holt. Peruse it carefully and see if it answers your questions.

Welcome to the forum. :)

Which code cycle will you be working under ? There have been several changes to article 680 from 2005 to 2008.

What has changed since 1988 and 2008 is, the addition of an equipotential bonding grid. The #8 bonds to the motor frame, and it does not, nor did it ever (even in 1988) need to go back to the panel unbroken, although many inspectors demanded this be done.

This is not a new pool about 20 years old but the people are having the pool light fixed and doing pavers around the pool and noticed there was no bond anywhere. I did call the inspector in my area to find out what they want but he was not around and they wanted me to make an appointment.
Thanks for the help

Interesting. Saturday my wife and I went to visit some friends. They are having their above ground pool replaced.

The city inspector came out and told them nothing had to be bonded, except that a #8 wire had to be run from the bond lug on the pump back to the panel.

Its a plastic pool, no lights, but does have aluminum frame. Plastic ladder. Has a wood deck all the way around it (4' above ground).

I would have thought the only thing required would be to run a bond wire from the pump to the frame.
