in the 2011 NEC, 680.21(C) uses the word "outlets" pertaining to the GFCI protection of pool pump motors. Since outlets, by definition, is not only a receptacle, don't all pool pumps have to be on a GFCI whether or not they are cord and plug connected? It seems to me they would, but I am being told it only pertains to cord and plug connected motors.

Reread 680.21(C) again....

GFCI Protection. Outlets supplying pool pump motors connected to single-phase, 120 volt through 240 volt branch circuits, rated 15 or 20 amps, whether by receptacle or by direct connection, shall be provided with ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel.

That's how I read it too, it amazes me how people will argue something they believe to be true even after you show them differently. This guy swears it only pertains to "outlets" which he says are receptacles. Even after I showed him the wording in the code section and the definition of outlet, he still says he's right. Oh well, some men you just can't reach.
