Poor memory about luminaires taps

I feel like I asked this question before and I've been searching but can't find anything definitive.

I thought that I read as long as u have a jbox and your whips are less than 6ft then u can downsize taps to individual luminaries to serve that lights load. I cannot remember where this is at in the codebook or if it is just listed assemblies.

Can someone clarify for me. I'm talking about in grid ceilings if u set 1 junction box and tap into a #12 with #14/2 mc to feed laying.

Self made is fine as long as you use fixture wire and not normal building wire.
I will never ever understand these rules the only thing I can make out is they want to make it so hard to do this that u buy assemblies from manufacturers. All I want to do is make my taps 14/2 so the only way to do this is buy 3/8 flex and tffn. But flex is marked up 2$/ft while mc is 78¢. I just don't understand. I guess the only place I can see this method is in hospitals that require fmc for life safety and in patient rooms with beds. Sorry don't mean to throw a hissy fit but when I see things that don't make sense it really annoys me.

Buy the right marked up wire and u can make your own whips and not have to deal with #12 in a lighting junction box or buy our 12/2 mc which is one of our highest margin products and u don't have to worry about inspectors man come we need to do something about these corporate lobbyists this has to be a manufacturer pushed code.

I haven't priced whips lately but the were low enough to buy premade.
The labor saving makes it worth it. Lights with them attached even more.

At Home Depot:
6ft 14ga sol = $17.71
8ft 12ga sol = $14.98
8ft 12ga str = $15.73

Interesting that 6' #14 is more than 8' #12.

Graybar sells them I think for 2$/ft it's just so silly that mc is only a listed assembly when a factory makes it. It definitely would save on labor but I wanted something smaller for a decent price. I'd love 16awg solid in some of these. I think I'll keep it in mind for when I need to make dimming whips 3/8 whips with 16ga tffn for control and power. If I remember right u still need a full size ground though.

Do u know anywhere to buy large spools of 3/8 flex I'd love to buy a bulk roll like 1000 ft. Maybe they just don't sell that size because it would become damaged.

Should be able to order from your local supply house. I've seen it listed online at length up to 1000' but that listing showed it out of stock. Biggest issue I could see with 1000' rolls is the bulk size would make it difficult to work with.
