i showed up today to do the can light dance, and the painter
had just scraped the popcorn ceilings, and didn't bag the room.
popcorn, it was **everywhere**, including in the shag carpet
(circa 1970) that is due to be pulled up and torn away......
here's the deal... the ceilings are plaster, and gray in color...
no final white plaster coat, no paint, just gray plaster...
the house was built in 1960, so it's well before the Asbestos word was
banned in 1973.
my initial thought was that the house had popcorn shot on the
ceiling later on, and asbestos isn't an issue.... then i thought
about it a second... the only way the ceilings have no finish
on them is if popcorn was shot on initially, back in 1960....
meaning the popcorn is probably full of asbestos....
so... where do i get this crap tested? i also need to find out
if the plaster has asbestos, before i cut 4 dozen can lights in.
using asbestos in the final coat of plaster was common, as it
allowed the plaster to trowel out very nicely.... it wasn't common
in the scratch coats, cause it wasn't needed.
and, is my reasoning behind the ceiling sound for assuming that
the acoustic was sprayed when the house was built, or is there
another explanation that would allow me to leave the tyvex suit
and purple cartridge respirator in the van?
thanks for any info and experience you guys have....
