Does anyone ever encounter individual wires mounted on porcelain standoffs with plug fuses in both the neutral and live wires? It was common practice to replace a 15A fuse with a 30A, and when that didn't do the trick, a penny was placed under the fuse! Wonder any of us oldsters survived!

Some of us didn't.I have seen fires over this and there still are some places using this system.

I assume you are talking about knob and tube with Edison base fuses as opposed to open wire service drops on P knobs? I grew up in a house that had both and worked on both as an electrical contractor (1974 - 1979).
