We have 60AMP, 460V, 3P fused disconnects with receptacles scattered around our plant for temporary portable equipment use. These are typically used for cord and plug connection of portable welders and other misc. larger equipment. Most the welders have a 30AMP main with a #10AWG cord and plug attached to them.

Since most of the fused disconnects have 60AMP fuses installed in them does the 25-FT tap rule apply to the cord and plug attached to the welders or is there another section of the Code that would apply to the protection of the attached cord and plug?

Thank in advance.

Take a look at 250-138 for your ground connection method. Article 400 for cord application.
Article 630.12 for you supply conductor sizes and overcurrent requirements based on the duty cycle etc. of the welders.

based on 630.12 the conductors that supply the welder shall be protected by an overcurrent device rated or set at not more than 200% of the conductor ampacity.

So the 30A wire used to connect the welder to the 60A fused disconnect should be OK.

Thanks
