With the winter weather approaching here in NC i was helping my Dad get my grandparents generator ready in case they need it. I had the cover off the to take a peek at the back of the receptacles and i noticed a decent size capacitor mounted to the frame.

after doing some looking around the web i can't seem to find solid info on what this capacitor is for. best i could find is that it is the cheapest form of voltage regulation. was hoping someone up here could shed some more light. if you have a schematic that would be great. was also interested from a technical aspect of how it works just as much as what it does.

If the generator uses a DC field coil rather than permanent magnets, it is probably in fact a DC filter capacitor.

I am relatively confident it is a capacitor. I did not take the time to read any specs from it as i wasn't in the position to do so.

the generator does not have permanent magnets. GoldDigger are you saying this is the filter for the field current?

It might be. Or a supply filter for the active electronics that make up an electronic voltage regulator.

You haven't provided a manufacturer or model number for the generator, I doubt anyone can help with a schematic without that very important information.
