There is a detached shed that we are running a 50 amp sub panel to through underground conduit with two ground rods per NEC code I’m very familiar with the one feeder or one circuit rule on a detached building. Can we relocate the portable generator inlet to the detached shed through a separate conduit run back to the main panel and not run afoul of the code? From a safety standpoint, anytime the generator is in use it is feeding the main panel, so the shed is not being fed directly from the generator, but through its own circuit back to the main panel. Is this hillbilly logic?

Sounds like an excellent, code-compliant installation. (as long as the main & generator breakers are interlocked, et al.)

No, the hillbilly touch would be running strings through those same two conduits to enable turning the main breaker off and the generator breaker on without needing to walk back to the main house.
