A 5KW gen with a 30A/220V output to a 8 circuit MLO panel. Can I move 6 breakers from the main panel to this and install 2 - 2P30A breakers opposite each other with one being fed from the main panel and the other from the gen. I want a tie for these breakers to be able to switch on power failure. Any problem with this and where can I get the tie?

Most of the tie kits I've seen require the breakers to be next to each other, not across. Of course somebody will find an exception.:roll:

Square D had one already set up with the interlock, and 6-8 spaces if I remember correctly. I think it was rated at 60 amps. I bought it at the orange box a couple of years ago, but havn't seen them there lately.

GE us to make a small 8 cir panel with what your want to do , 2 - 30 amp 2 pole breakers side by side with red tie bar between them.

I have a Square D rocker that snaps onto one 2p breaker like a lock tab, and acts as interlock between that breaker and one installed next to it. I've even used it as an interlock for a small ML panel used as the main panel in a small house.

I just installed one.
Siemens makes exactly what you describe for two breakers facing each other (not side-by side). Fits ITE/Murray/Bryant, etc. two-pole breakers. UL listed. Look for Siemens Interlock Kit Part # ECSBPK01.

Wanted to add-just completed order with Frost Electric Supply, St Louis, Missouri. Good service. Reasonable prices & shipping rates. Adding these guys to short list of trustworthy online suppliers.

I do a lot of renovation work in 100-yr.-old+ buildings. Sometimes I need hard-to-find materials ('special order' stuff). If local independent supply stores don't have what I need, I try Lowes & H. Depot. If they don't have it either, I go online.
I'm sure you all do the same.
Funny, I grew up before cellphones and computers were commonplace, now I can't do business without them.:D
