I am installing an 8 space generator panel next to main service panel .I am going to put a power inlet on the outside of the house in order to plug in a portable generator when needed. The generator is 8kw running watts.Panel is rated 100 amp and power inlet is rated 30 amp 120/240V.
I was going to run a 10/3 romex between the gen panel and power inlet.Inspector said it has to be in conduit but I cant find that in code. Has anyone run into this? ? Thanks

Sounds like a local code or the inspectors own rule. Have you asked him where you can find this requirement?

Hey may be thinking that the romex can't be run in a wet location, which it would be if run to a pb30 outside the house. Kind of pickey though.

and so are we to assume that we need conduit for all our outdoor lites now. That seems to be what the inspector is trying to say here. Bet he cant quote a code section.

Sounds like everything you're doing is OK. Can you tell us more about the installation (i.e conditions through where you're running the wire; wire stapled to or run through rafters; wire exposed to possible damage, etc.)

I wish Mike Holt would publish a book on "Imaginary Code Violations" for inspectors. That way we could just refer to simple a violation # instead of having to search through the entire NEC to try and find what they may be referring to.
