Portable Generators?

I’m sure at this moment, one would have to take whatever generator the store has. But what’s the recent status of brands? I know Generac had issues awhile back. I had a Subaru that didn’t last long. Had a small Harbor Freight one that didn’t last either. Our plant has DeWalt that have been there a few years. They seemed ok the little I used them.

I have a couple small Ryobi inverter generators, leaking carbs the biggest issue with them. I have a large Champion dual fuel that I’ve had no problems with, but it is pretty loud. I also have a Honda 3000i inverter generator, no problems with it, but not as quiet as it should be.

Honda is still the best for portables, and hands down the quietest.

The inverter ones are very stable as well.

I run a champion for a remote ag well that doesn’t have power to it. It’s cheap and gets the job done, its loud, and when the voltage goes haywire, I replace it.

Haven’t heard anything good about Generac portables. I’m an Aligned Contractor for Generac, and I think their HSB are fine, but I dont think their portables are quite as good.

Harbor freight is disposable, pretty much everything they sell.

The Costco/Big Box Mart brands are hit and miss. I don’t personally have experience with powerhorse, firman, Westinghouse, and the like, but I’ve installed plenty of MTS for customers who use them sporadically. I think it comes down to how much you’ll be using them.

Northstar from Northern Tool are actually pretty good. They are loud, and don’t throttle down with decreased output, but they run Honda motors and have been good for me.

Before I installed the Generac at my ranch, we ran about 5 generators every time power went out. All were Honda or Northstar.

Longest outage we had was three weeks. We lose power about a dozen times a year, from 1 day to a couple weeks.

I have a 9kW Leroy Somer connected to a B&S engine. It's been a great one over the last 25 years or so. Broke down and got a whole house generac about two years ago.
Still run the other one in the shop on the load bank to keep it "exercised"

I bought a Harbor Freight 9kW one and it ran many many days building a house. It now is used as the emergency power at my daughter's house.

Change the oil and only shut it off by turning the fuel off, not use the switch to stop the engine. Now the carburetor bowl stays empty while resting for months so it is ready for service!

My Yamaha failed and I replaced it with a Wacker Neuson. Time will tell if it was worth the high price. We do have frequent power outages.

I took a big risk, purchased an off brand. Smarter Tools. There were not a lot of dual fuel, incl profane back then.
Has worked out great. Bought in 2010, can't believe 10 years old.
Model: STGP 7500 DEB
Ran it on gasoline 1st day I bought it, let it run out of gas.
Been running on propane ever since. Unfortunately, not inverter, loud, but not a killer.
Purchased 100 gal tank, fitted w correct valve for propane truck to top off.
But I exercise it monthly w my 30 pounders, from my old wrecked RV.
The 30 pounders I can lug to be refilled easily.
Very happy (lucky?).
I'm in MA, small house, manual interlock. We switch circuits on / off, as needed. No big deal.
Well for water.
Used several times, couple days, to 8 or 9 days.
Has 60 hrs now.
