I have a portable Chinook air heater which can either powered by mains power or via the onboard generator. When powered by mains 480V I have a 4 conductor cable 3phases plus a ground conductor which serves as a ground back to the MCC.Do I need to install a ground rod as well?Looking at NEC 250.34 they way I read it you dont if run on generator power, so what would the difference be if running off mains power?Any ideas on this welcombe.

No purpose for a ground rod at the heater. It won't clear a fault.
We need to know more about the generator.
Is the neutral switched in the transfer switch?
