I have a PD which is used for Rock shows. This PD is portable, travels the country and is bound by UL-1640, NEC 590.

I wish I could attach a picture but cannot,, anyway

The PD has 4 rows of horizontal plates. Each plate has (3) breakers and (3) L6-20 or (3) L6-30 receptacles per plate. So One horizontal plate, (19"long) = 3 CB's and 3 receptacles. The manufacturer will not mix the L6-20 and L6-30 receptacles on the same horizontal plate, will not give a code ref, just will not do it. Question: If I change the breaker, associated wiring and receptacle will I violate any part the of NEC code? What I want to do is change one of the horizontal panels to have (2) L-620's and (1) L-6 30. Thank you in advance for any advice.

Question: How would I be in violation of UL? The receptacle, wire and all other associated parts would still be installed per manufactures instructions. It is a third party company who decided to group them.

In post (1) I am referring to the Manufacturer of the PD, but aren't we all governed by the manufacturer of the receptacle ( In this case Bryant )... not the manufacturer of the Box (the PD). I wire are you saying that I have to be governed by the maker of the PD?

P.S thank you all for the responses, I realize that this is a bizarre situation..;)

I hate to say this, but with the "quality" of some of the PDs floating around out there, if OP modifies the PD in the manner described it'll still be much safer than the other gear.

Are you concerned about the listing? I've seen quite a lot of PDs that aren't listed but are quite well designed and built (usually custom jobs). Also, I've never seen a venue that really cared about using listed PDs, although I have seen a few that refused to connect the really ugly ones.

You do not know that the standard that UL lists that equipment under does not require the grouping that was used.

Than again it may not make a bit of difference. :smile:

Once you modify any UL listed equipment, even if it is with listed parts you do not know how it affects the listing of the whole item....and neither will UL know unless they get to look at it.

What you want to do is probably fine, but if you feel you are bound by UL-1640 the only way to ensure compliance is either do not modify it or modify it and have a field evaluation for continued compliance with 1640.

Good luck, the fact that you even care enough to ask makes you better than the average Theater / show electricians that I have meet.

You are 100% correct, I can do the mod and never have to worry about the venue calling me on it, but I'm attempting to get the shop 100% compliant, showing the guys that we are trying to go the extra mile and be compliant even with the small things is a goal I want to attain this year.

Or I could just say screw it,,,:grin:
