I am looking into an incident involving an old cedar pole that broke while a contractor was doing telephone line work about 6 feet below the power lines. The top of the pole broke and had to be repaired.

The question is...where would i find info in the code that discusses safe work practices on poles as well as what type of maintenance or inspection program must be followed by power companies regarding the safety of their equipment?

Thanks,
Chris

Re: Power lines and poles

Chris, safe work practices are covered in the NESC (National Electrical Safety Code) for utility workers. That was the easy part of the answer. The NESC has some requirements for inspection of facilities; however, the local government (normally at the state level) will probably have inspection and treatment requirements.

This is all the information I can give to you since we will not be a part of any litigation. With that being said, I am locking this thread. :)
