Thanks for the link. Hmm... Balloons.

Emergency officials and work crews blocked off part of the area in front of the stadium on Abbott Road as they worked to remove the balloons, which appeared to be affecting the electrical flow
How did they appear to be affecting the electric flow? Glowing, sparks flying off of them?:roll:

As djohns6 said, they were mylar, metallized balloons. They can cause phase-to-phase or phase to ground short circuits, which can create overcurrent or overvoltage spikes and can damage equipment.

The breaker they referred to as failing was probably at end-of-life, or already operating at the limits of its ratings, when this incident failed it out.

Get used to that kind of thing, folks. With the aging of our power grid, lack of investment in maintenance and upgrades by most utilities, extended outages by such minor disturbances will happen more often.
