Situation: A 120V outlet exists in a factory. An HMI inside an enclosed cabinet needs power. The HMI has a regular computer power cable connecting it to a 'pass-through outlet' on the sheet metal of the enclosure. A power extension cable is connected between the outside of the cabinet to the 120V outlet in the factory. This is not okay, correct? Where in the NEC would it state this?

I am not in possession of all the facts regarding this setup, but it occurs to me that it is not a lot different than plugging a computer monitor into an outlet.

Maybe you could post a picture of what it is you think is not to code or potentially unsafe.
